2018 Filmmaking 101 Workshop at Roberts Camera

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION – James Moriarty will teach participants how to effectively use their smartphones, camcorders, DSLRs and mirrorless cameras to make digital films. The workshop will consist of four 3-hour classes. Each class will focus on a different aspect of video production. The workshop will be designed to be hands on, and the participants will learn by helping make a video from start to finish.

CLASS 1 – Introduction to Digital Filmmaking

  • What is a filmmaker?
  • Types of Filmmaking and the filmic language/vocabulary
  • How to develop an idea for a video and create a script
  • How to pre-visualize every shot from your script

CLASS 2 – Video Preproduction
Date: April 14, 2017 – Time: 1PM to 4PM

  • Building your production team and scheduling shoots
  • Knowing your equipment
  • Camera and audio recording basics
  • Lighting basics
  • Framing and composition

CLASS 3 – Video Production
Date: April 21, 2017 – Time: 1PM to 4PM

  • Directing tips and tricks
  • Shooting interviews with a green screen

CLASS 4 – Post Production
Date: April 28, 2017 – Time: 1PM to 4PM

  • Editing theories and principles
  • The ins and outs of basic non-linear video editing
  • Getting your video ready for on-line distribution


James E. MoriartyJames E. Moriarty is the owner of Moriarty Media and the producer of the Carmel Film Forum. He is an award winning artist and the recipient of arts grants from the City of Carmel and the Indiana Arts Commission. James earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1991, where he majored in graphic design, photography and filmmaking. He has taken those artistic skills and turned them into his life’s work by continually advancing his knowledge of the technology required to produce digital media.
